Duke switched up your rate plan? Batteries are how you take it back.

We're happy to add batteries when power companies change the rules on you. A battery can help you keep midday solar for the evening. It depends on your rate and usage.

Rules checked October 2026. Rules change, so confirm your tariff with your utility. Detail Solar isn't affiliated with any utility, and the utility decides every interconnection request.

Existing systems

Can you add a battery to an existing solar system?

Often, yes. The first check is the inverter you already have. A battery can connect on the DC side, with the solar, or on the AC side, beside the inverter. That choice changes the hardware and the paperwork.

Under the 2025 procedures Duke Energy and Dominion Energy use, DC-coupled storage that does not change maximum generating capacity, the production profile, or the AC configuration is not a material modification. An inverter that is not a like-kind replacement, a settings change, or a battery that changes the AC connection usually means paperwork before anyone turns it on. Your utility decides what review it wants.

What changed for SC solar owners

Retail one-for-one net metering is not the plan for a new Duke Energy or Dominion Energy application. Customers who applied before May 16, 2019 kept that retail credit through December 31, 2025. Customers who applied from May 16, 2019 through May 31, 2021 keep it through May 31, 2029. Later applications are on Solar Choice. Those dates are in S.C. Code section 58-40-20.

Duke has a Net Metering Transition rider for customers leaving the old credit. Customers elect it. If they do not, they move to Solar Choice time-of-use. Confirm the enrollment window with Duke. This page does not print a last day. Dominion's December 31, 2025 filing says residential customers who had not chosen a rate were moved to Solar Choice on January 1, 2026.

Santee Cooper's Rider DG-25, for bills on and after April 1, 2025, uses hourly netting. Solar used in the home offsets retail. Hourly net exports receive an energy credit that is adjusted at least once a year. Santee Cooper's FAQ says it does not provide one-to-one net metering. The credit amount is on the rider, and it can change, so it is not printed here.

Several cooperatives have moved to net billing. Blue Ridge Electric's rider, effective September 1, 2025, nets monthly and credits excess at its Value of Renewable Generation rate. Berkeley Electric puts new installs on a Renewable Surplus Rider and credits exports at a rate it updates annually. Palmetto Electric's net billing rider dates from July 1, 2024, and its legacy net metering rider sunsets December 31, 2027. Laurens Electric publishes an RGS Net Billing Rider. Broad River Electric publishes a Net Billing Policy. Each board sets its own rules.

Why a battery can help now

A battery can help you use more of your own solar. It depends on your rate and usage. We will not put a dollar figure on this page.

Export credits on these newer plans are an avoided-cost credit, an energy credit, or a cooperative rider rate. That is not the same thing as a one-for-one retail credit. Keeping midday solar for your own evening can help when the hours you pay for power are not the hours the panels are busiest. Duke's Solar Choice schedule and Dominion's Rate 5 are time-of-use, and Duke adds critical-peak days. Santee Cooper nets by the hour, which leaves a shorter window to bank exports. Duke nets monthly inside time-of-use periods.

State law counts a battery charged solely from onsite solar as part of the customer-generator. Dominion's Solar Choice rider uses that same idea. Backup during an outage is a separate benefit, and it depends on transfer equipment and on the utility's rules. Laurens Electric, for example, says backup that does not run in parallel needs an open-transition transfer switch.

Duke Energy in South Carolina

Solar Choice, the Net Metering Transition rider, and Power Manager Battery Control are spelled out onDuke Energy Solar Choice. Short version: Solar Choice is time-of-use, excess is an avoided-cost credit, and a battery can help you hold midday solar for the evening. Power Manager Battery Control is a real South Carolina program that can pay bill credits when Duke dispatches an enrolled battery. The amount is on Duke's rider.

Duke's PowerPair rebate is North Carolina only. It is not a South Carolina offer.

Dominion, Santee Cooper, and co-ops

Dominion Energy Solar Choice requires Residential Rate 5 time-of-use. Excess is netted inside each time period, then applied to lower-priced periods. What remains carries forward by the month. Accumulated excess is paid at avoided cost on the November bill, which clears the bank. The rider has a minimum term of 10 years and a monthly minimum bill. Confirm the current minimum onDominion's rider. Storage charged solely from onsite renewables is inside Dominion's customer-generator definition, up to 20 kW AC.

Santee Cooper's hourly netting, plus an export credit below a one-for-one retail credit, is a clear case for storing midday solar for the evening. It can help. It depends on your rate and usage. The Solar Home rebate excludes batteries. If the house is sold, the next owner signs an amended agreement and receives the current rider's credits. Rider DG-25 is onSantee Cooper's site.

Cooperative export credits are rider rates, not retail one-for-one credits, on the net-billing schedules above. A battery can help you use more of the solar in the house. The co-op still decides the interconnection. Links forBlue Ridge,Laurens,Broad River,Berkeley, andPalmettoare the place to read the current rider.

Utility paperwork for a battery add

Plan on paperwork before the battery is turned on. The utility decides whether the change needs a study, a new meter, or only a notice. Written authorization comes before a material modification on the Duke and Dominion procedures. Do not energize until the utility's written approval or permission to operate is in hand. The full sequence is onsolar interconnection in South Carolina.

Greer CPW is a concrete example. Its application says the customer submits a new application at least 30 days before modifying the system's rating. Other utilities use their own clocks. We help you understand what the form is asking. The account holder signs.

Tax credits, briefly

The federal residential credit, section 25D, does not apply to installs completed after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats the expenditure as made when installation is completed, so a payment before that date for an install finished later does not qualify.

The South Carolina solar energy credit may apply to a battery charged 100% from solar and tied to the system. The Department of Revenue has listed 100% solar battery storage connected with a solar energy system as qualifying, and non-solar battery storage as not qualifying. The credit is capped per facility, so a home that already claimed it for the panels may have little or no room left. This is not tax advice. Talk with your tax professional. The rest of the state credit is onsolar cost in Greenville.

Questions

Will a battery lower my bill?

It depends on your rate and usage, and on the battery. A battery can help you use more of your own solar, including in the evening, and it can provide backup. We will look at your actual bill with you. This page does not promise a lower bill.

Can my battery charge from the grid?

South Carolina defines a customer-generator battery as a storage device configured to charge solely from onsite solar. We do not advise charging a battery from the grid. Ask your utility before anyone changes how a battery charges.

Does my old installer need to be involved?

No. We add batteries to systems another company installed. If you cannot reach that company, see the orphaned systems page. The utility agreement is a separate document, covered on the interconnection page.

Is there a battery rebate in South Carolina?

Duke Energy Power Manager Battery Control is a South Carolina program that can pay bill credits for an enrolled battery. We do not print the credit amount. Duke PowerPair is North Carolina only. Santee Cooper's Solar Home rebate excludes batteries. Confirm any program with your utility.
